Have you ever grabbed a little pack of sushi as part of a supermarket meal deal? Some dry and flavourless rice, wrapped in something slimy, tasting overwhelmingly of sadness?

123V is the literal opposite of that.

Flavours so enticing that the soy sauce and wasabi almost felt redundant. A panoply of delights, presented with care and served with a flourish.

We went for the お任せ (Omasake) - which means the chef chose 20 pieces of sushi for us. We had a 241 deal, so got that twice. Is forty sushi too much sushi? Almost!

At £35 a head, the tasting menu is cheaper than a starter and main at most central London restaurants. It isn't cheap but is is exquisite.

Every bite brought new flavours. I'd previously tried cooking some of the synthetic tuna replacement myself, but here it is done properly. Perfect texture, subtle flavours, and beautifully wrapped.

There's a small cocktail menu - with an inventive non-alcoholic list.

I had just enough room for a dessert - the sorbet sampler. Again, lush flavours delicately balanced.

The garden seating outside (covered and with heaters) was delightful on a crisp autumn evening. Weirdly, the toilets are through a boutique shop and down a flight of stairs.

With the deal, a meal for two, plus cocktails, wine, and a well-deserved tip, came to £90.

We flew in early to Kuala Lumpur - the only way to stave off the jetlag was to go hunting for lunch. We made the mistake of trying to walk through the city. What looked like a brisk 30 minute stroll became an exercise in dashing across busy roads in the sweltering heat.

My brain was mush by the time we found the restaurant - a little out of the way and nestled inside what looks like an office block - so we ordered one of the sushi set menus.

(My brain was too mushy to take a photo - but the menu is accurate.)

It was incredible. The waiter gave us strict instructions on the order in which to eat everything. That was absolutely necessary - and meant the meal finished with a burst of mango sushi.

Well, it didn't quite end there. If I see a vegan tiramisu, I'm going to grab it with both hands! Well, I got two spoons, so Liz helped me with it.

The wait staff were incredibly helpful in explaining the menu, teaching us about which apps to use to get around town, and and giving us directions afterwards.

Accepts credit cards, free WiFi, and cosily decorated.

A few months ago I reviewed the UK grown wasabi of The Wasabi Company.

The good folk at Kazari saw my review and offered to send some of their wasabi to review. Their Kazari rhizomes are imported from Japan and America, and they're about half the price of The Wasabi Company.

After months of procurement, we successfully diverted a portion of Asia's natural wasabi harvest from Tokyo's sushi bars to the UK. Our customers, including some of Europe's leading sushi chefs, love it. It really is a superior product, less harsh, subtly sweet and infinitely more refreshing than wasabi paste. So next time you buy our sushi online, be sure to try some fresh wasabi!

The sushi came very well packaged in a little thermal vest, with some cold water, and plenty of padding. Perfect for keeping it fresh and tasty.

The Look

There's no doubt, it is a thing of beauty. A green so dark it is almost black, shimmering with promise.

The Taste

The smell wasn't as pungent as the wasabi I'd tried before. It was still strong, but didn't leave my nose feeling like it had been assaulted. The taste was cooler and slightly woodier than the last fresh wasabi. Think of it as the difference between pepeprmint and spearmint.

Spread on some home made sushi it was absolute perfection - a little soy sauce to bring out the flavour and I was in taste heaven.

It really does knock the socks off the luminous green sludge which passes for wasabi in the UK.

Conclusion

The Kazari wasabi is flown in from <del datetime="2012-12-17T15:26:50+00:00">Japan</del> America (see comment) - which adds considerably to its food miles. The Wasabi Company grow theirs in Dorset, UK. That said, Kazari is considerably cheaper than the UK grown alternative.

Both offer an amazing taste, an experience unlike any other you've had before. Half the fun in making your own food is using the best ingredients you can find, and mixing and matching flavours to suit your palette. In a social setting, having fresh wasabi at the table shows off your gastronomic sensibilities and is a treat for the eyes and nose.

You can buy imported wasabi from Kazari.
