There is a thoroughly modern story coming out of Ireland: Drones are being used routinely around Irish racecourses to take advantage of a short time lag between broadcast footage of events and the action on the ground. Even this small delay allows gamblers take advantage of changes to so-called “in-running” betting odds, if say a horse begins to struggle, jumps awkwardly, or falls. The battle above the skies of Irish racecourses: drone operators vs Horse Racing I…

A John Gilmore (probably) said, "The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." Let it be so with drones. About a decade ago, I wrote about Smuggling USB Sticks. You can load an incredible amount of data onto flash memory and carry it just about anywhere. Nowadays, drones mean that people don't need to physically carry drives themselves. And drones can carry a lot more than data. Drones deliver abortion pills to women in Poland Drones have been used to deliver…

The good folk at RC Moment have sent me another drone to review! This is the Linxtech IN1601 Mini Drone and it is crazy small! It comes with a battery which is 3.7V 200mAh - good for several minutes of flight. There's a USB cable for the battery as well. There are replacement propeller blades, and propeller guards. If you …

The motors and propellers fold away into the body of the drone - making it less prone to damage in transit. Black Box It all comes wrapped up in a portable padded box. Bundled in with the drone, you …

I'm probably not the first to do this - but it was a fun way to learn just how tricky it is to control a cheap quadcopter even in mild weather. This video has no sound. Your browser doesn't support HTML5 video tag. Good enough quality to make sure the panels aren't covered in bird-mess, leaves, or anything else which might block their efficiency. Thanks to Jack Franklin for the drone. …
