Movie Review: Gunpowder Milkshake

ULTRAVIOLENCE: THE MOVIE!!!!

This is a complete splatter-fest with an unremitting obsession with cartoon gore. The paper-thin plot is contrived to give maximum gunshots and throat-punches per minute. Which is fine, if you like that sort of thing.

Some of the action sequences are brilliant. For once, we get some fight scenes which don't rapid-cut every few frames. There's excellent use of the built environment and props which are a definite homage to early Jackie Chan movies. One fight in particular is reminiscent of Two Crippled Heroes. But, sadly, it quickly reverts to tropes.

Motorola's product placement is overt - who know so many members of the criminal underground love flip phones?? - and there a few Netflix shows shoehorned in (Bee and Puppycat Season 2 is coming soon!!). But such is the way modern movies are made.

The endless swarms of baddies and extravagant moves are expressly designed to mimic modern FPS games. They know their audience!

Is it a feminist fantasy? A Bechdel-Test Blockbuster? Sure! Why not? The Sisterhood of Slow-Motion Shooting are equal opportunity slayers.

Final question, why does Lena Headey get to keep her natural accent while Karen Gillan's brogue is subsumed into a generic American twang?

Verdict
