Review: This is Shakespeare by Emma Smith

· 150 words

William Shakespeare glaces at us from the cover of a book.

So much of what we say about Shakespeare is either not true, or just not relevant, deflecting us from investigating the challenges of his inconsistencies and flaws. This electrifying new book thrives on revealing, not resolving, the ambiguities of Shakespeare's plays and their changing topicality.

A joyous read in these troubling times. A series of essays on Shakespeare from one of the UK's leading experts.

At times, this feels like having a "Director's Commentary" on your favourite plays. Part trivia, part behind-the-scenes exposé, part history lesson.

It's an excellent way to see behind the scenes - and revealed to me many hidden mysteries.
