It wouldn't need to have host capability just to power a light, though, as far as I'm aware - a normal "client" USB port has power transmission? (Several friends have reported issues upgrading from 8.x to 9.10; a clean installation seems safer, but, even then, a couple of have struggled with hardware recognition - depends on the specs. of your machine, but, a VM image might be a safer way of testing?)
