I am incredibly gratified to be in the running for Geek of the Year 2010. Thanks to The 405 for picking me as one of their favourites. You can check out the other entrants on Facebook - don't worry, you don't have to vote for me! You can also find GeekOfTheYearUK on Twitter. …

I love being vegetarian. Don't get me wrong, there are some annoying aspects of having a restricted diet - but mostly it's plain sailing. I also love visiting food fairs - but recently it has felt like I've seen every vegetarian product under the sun. There doesn't seem to be much more innovation in veggie friendly food. This year, I went to the Good Food Show (well, MasterChef Live - but…

It looks like I've missed an anniversary! I've been blogging continuously for three years. I've also recently turned thirty-one - and it's got me thinking about the digital trail that I leave across the Internet. I started blogging nine years ago - but they were private blogs. Love letters to the woman who would eventually become my wife. I'm sure I hope I have them backed up somewhere. I…

Almost a year ago, I postulated a way to turn the tables on the News International paywall. After playing around for a bit, I discovered that it was easy to block The Times from reading a blog, but I couldn't find an easy way to disable the paywall on receipt of payment. So, I've set up a voluntary paywall. It's in the sidebar - and looks something like this... This was partly a way for me …

This blog is proud to be XHTML 1.0 Strict Compliant. Just like it is polite to use correct spelling and grammar for human readers, I believe that correct markup is "polite" for rendering engines. I've recently started using DynamicWP's Simple White Theme. The theme is excellent, but generated around 60 validation errors. Luckily these were caused by a scant half dozen errors in the source co…

If you haven't already heard, I've joined the award winning team at Touchnote ltd. I was overwhelmed by the support of my friends on Twitter and by the excellent bloggers at Mobile Industry Review and The Really Mobile Project. http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/2010/04/vodafones-terence-eden-joins-touchnote.html Starting a new job is never easy - but you guys have given me wind in my…

In 1974, a post-boxing day Britain tuned in to BBC 1 to watch "Robot" - the first Doctor Who story to star Tom Baker. For the next 6 years, 2 months, and 22 days, Tom Baker was The Doctor. But, as these things are wont to do, it came to an end. Forgive the spoilers, but The Doctor lay broken and bleeding after The Master threw him off the Pharos Project. Death was certain. And then... On t…

NA! BLO! PO! MO! It sounds like a Judoon war cry - "Na Blo Po Mo!" But rather than legions from the Shadow Proclamation, it is an amassed horde of bloggers poised to do battle with the enemy. Gentlemen - the enemy is us. I noticed that I had averaged a blog post every few days in October - I wondered if I could beat that and still retain some vestige of quality. During BarCampLondon I heard…

The built in Wordpress importer doesn't let one import a Blogger FTP blog. I tried converting my FTP blog to a Blogspot one, but that didn't help. Luckily, a post by AlanA pointed me to Blogger2Wordpress conversion tool. I exported my blog from Blogger, uploaded it to the tool, it spat out a .wxr file which I then imported to Wordpress. Looks like it has got all the posts, images and c…

I've been fairly happy using Blogger.com to compose and publish my blog posts. But it's become obvious that it's an old and outdated platform which isn't receiving as much love from Google as it should be. I've been persuaded by Torgo and others to play with Wordpress. All I knew about it before today was that every blogger on twitter keeps moaning about it - so I really wasn't quite sure what …

I'm updating the blog's template to be .mobi compliant. I'm using the Blogger mobile template found on the dev.mobi site. After seeing it on SMSTextNews I'm implanting Disqus comments. Let's see if we can get them validating against the W3c. …

SHKSPR.mobi exists to bring the world's greatest playwrite to the SMS generation! No more will teenagers have to read long and complex prose, they can have everything compressed into a language with which they are more familiar! That is, of course, a load of nonsense. This site exists because I wanted a test bed for all my mobile content. I figured that abusing Shakespeare was the best way to…
