Bespoke Computing Consultancy

Hello! So you'd like to hire me as a freelancer? Here's a brief page explaining how we can work together and what my rates are.

What I can do for you

I specialise in "can a computer do that?" consultancy. I am here to help you figure out if you can build something. How it can be built. Or whether you should seek a different approach.

I can build you a proof-of-concept program. Or I can build you a demo website. Or I can show you what not to do. My job is to quickly and efficiently build something with you.

Examples of what I've built for people

  • A small business wanted to run some Twitter bots
    • We discussed what was and wasn't possible with the Twitter API and built a sample bot.

  • A museum wanted to play a video every time a visitor put a floppy disk into a Raspberry Pi
    • I built a Proof-of-Concept program using Python and VLC.

  • An early-stage start-up wanted to validate some of their technology ideas
    • The team spend a day workshopping the product with me to find out what was feasible.

  • A medical charity wanted a way for patients to write a private diary they could share with friends
    • Together, we built a password-protected website with an easy to use interface.

  • An author wanted a showcase for all her books
    • I created a WordPress site with Schema.org semantic markup and newsletter functionality.

  • An artist wanted a way to generate "NFT" style avatars for their installation
    • We worked out several ways to generate images, and share them with visitors.

  • A community group wanted to encourage people to get solar panels
    • I arranged a website demo which integrated which integrated with public APIs to show how much money could be saved.

  • A journalist wanted to show "events" on a map
    • We spent time building several different ways the data could be visualised on a web-map.

How I work with you

I'm always happy to spend half-an-hour chatting to prospective clients about what I can do to meet their needs. There's no charge for this. We'll spend 30 minutes on the phone / Zoom / Hangouts working out if I'm the right fit for you. There's no obligation; if you decide that you want to go in a direction then I'm happy to recommend other people more suited to your project.

If you do decide to go forward, then you typically pay me per day of consultancy, split over 3 sessions:

  1. We spend about a quarter of the time discussing the problem. Working out how you want to solve it. And deciding what can realistically be built in the time available.
  2. I go away and build something based on your needs & timescale.
  3. We meet up and I show you how I've solved the problem. We work together to see what works, what doesn't, and what else needs doing.

At the end of the day, you can decide whether you want to retain my services for any extra work. Some clients just want to know if their idea is feasible before getting a team in to build the final version. Some clients want to try an idea and then stop. Some clients want to take the work and finish it themselves.

It's up to you. My job is to leave you better informed about your options.

Any code I create is handed over to you under an open source licence.

Rates

No one likes talking about money. But I believe in being transparent when it comes to how much I charge.

A single day of consultancy ranges from £650 to £1,200. The rate will depend on how urgently you need something built, how complicated the project is, and how many days you think you need.

Some clients want a continuous day. Others want to buy 8 hours of consultancy to use over a couple of months.

For longer projects, you may need to part-pay in advance. But we can discuss what works best for both of us.

All expenses are re-charged at cost, with receipts provided.

If you're a charity, non-profit, or other worthy cause - I am happy to provide generous discounts. Please contact me and we can work something out.

Payment terms

I accept all major credit cards, PayPal, bank transfers in £, €, US$, and more.

As per UK law, payment terms are within 30 days of invoice. No ifs, no buts.
