Book Review: Lessons in Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus

A fifties housewife holds up a television - which is showing a fifties housewife. This is a sickly sweet and somewhat preposterous book - but it is a lot of fun. Fifties feminism and cooking go together like bangers and mash. Chemistry and gender politics are the garnish on top.

I loved the way it told the story from multiple points of view - even the pet dog gets in on the act. I've no idea if the science was accurate, but it was delightful to be swept away by something so charming.

It is an excellent story - it's all wish fulfilment and unlikely co-incidence. But isn't that what fiction is all about? A way to see the world as we hope it could be? It's a sadly funny tale with a steely moral core. Perhaps a little preachy (peachy?) but it had me chuckling throughout.

And rather hungry.

@Edent Lots of good to be said about it but the "every page sparks joy" review on the cover hadn't prepared me for several traumas in the first 100 pages. The one that seemed to have the least plot-driving purpose was the sudden, almost in-passing, inclusion of a gay teen suicide that was barely mentioned again. I had to put the book down for a bit.
