About a dozen years ago, I first started seeing kids skating through malls on their shoes.
I was incredibly envious. They looked so cool and fun. Surely they sold them in adult sizes? Nope!
Not even the rip-off versions went up to my size. Bah!
I'd almost given up hope. But then, a few weeks ago, we were walking through Harrods' Toy Department0 when I spotted a grown man skating along the aisles. He whizzed up to a stand and started his patter. I didn't even let him finish. I snapped up a pair straight away. Without even going online to find them cheaper!
These are the Buzz Thunder Skates. Only £30 a pair - and the quickest way I know to break a major bone.
They are, obviously, not Heelys. They're adaptors which fit over your regular shoes. Even better than that, they light up as you go!
Wheeeeee!
They come with an allen key so you can adjust the width, and absolutely no instructions. So, with the help of YouTube, I took my first tentative steps.
All the grace and elegance of a baby gazelle!
They are weird. I can see why all the adverts show kids wearing full armour while using them. I was constantly on the verge of slipping over and knocking myself out.
But, I persisted, and was soon able to travel nearly the whole length of the kitchen without major incident.
My original plan was to take the adapters to work so I could skate around the office like a Cool Dude™ - but, sadly1 COVID has put a stop to that2.
These are stupidly fun. I don't think I'll ever be good enough3 to risk a trip to my local mall. But, for £304, it's run to relive a youthful experience I never had.
Zoooooooooooom!
