I read somewhere that the skill-reward balance is too hard in football. It's too difficult to score a goal. The result is low scores and a high possibility that the less well-skilled team can "fluke" a win. Compare this to Basketball where the balance is too easy and you end up with someone scoring almost every time. So scores are high and a match is just a series of short sprints from one end to the other and back again. Making the goals bigger, or doing away with Goal Keepers are two possible solutions.
