@u0421793 @neil @Edent I do run an separate off-grid 12V DC system that powers an RPi or two and my router and can do lights and laptop and small battery chargers, etc. But the losses in DC cabling are high for a given amount of metal, so I don't run it very far or use it for any very big loads. If mains power is reliable (we've had maybe 3 hours out in ~20Y here) then you can certainly manage without heating and other big loads for a little while. Lighting and Internet FTW!
